Pondskater Description Approximately 8-10mm, generally brown with a black pronotum and black antennae. Pond skaters are predatory bugs that mainly go around picking off the dead and unfortunate animals that fall onto the water surface and are trapped there. The common garden species are all good fliers which can easily move from pond to pond.

Pond skaters are insectivorous and use their feet to sense the vibrations of insects trapped by the surface tension of the water. The shorter front legs are used to catch and hold prey. The pond skater has piercing, sucking mouthparts called a rostrum or 'beak'.

They sit on the surface of ponds supported on superhydrophobic legs with which they can propel themselves rapidly. They eat insects trapped at the surface of the pond by the surface tension of the water.

There are 500 species of Gerridae in the world and they include the truly oceanic Halobates sp. We have 8 species in the UK, plus one occasional migrant from mainland Europe.

Pond Skaters. Around the world there are around 1700 species of Gerridae, or more commonly known as 'Pond Skaters' or 'Water Skimmers'. Here in Britain, we have a common species, Latin name 'Gerris Lacustris,' which is known as the 'Common Pond Skater,' and can be found all over Britain, Ireland and Europe.
