Classic Victorian Skirting Board 168mm x 21mm Plaster Ceiling Roses
Currently fitting new 18mm by 210mm skirting boards in my room and want to know the best practice to avoid cracking along top. Managed to get my skirting board supplier to cut a much higher 7mm rebate on back, this will allow skirting to be fitted more flush against the wall where its unlevel and minimise gap along the top.

Today I have tried to heat gun the paint from the skirting boards and I'm not sure what kind of material they are made from. I have attached a picture of what has happened. The square edge seems to get really damaged, even though I'm going carefully and I seem to scrape back to some sort of white finish and no further not like a raw wood finish.

The bit we did had a 5mm or so gap around the edge, covered nicely with the skirting board that pinned straight into the old timber fixings, mine however will be fixing to a wall made of plaster board over 100mm Kinspan on steel stud.
