The Poulton Elk Poulton-le-Fylde In July 1970, the almost-complete skeleton of a Stone Age elk was found during building work on a new house on Blackpool Old Road. The skeleton is around 13,500 years old and is particularly important, as barbs were found embedded in its bones - the earliest evidence of hunters this far north.

It became known as the Highfurlong, Poulton or Carleton Elk - depending on where you live! The animal was around three years old and weighed around 650lbs. Wounded 17 times by weapons, it still had the bone tips of the hunting barbs embedded in its ribs and one of its leg bones. Other identical barbs from Gallic spears have been found elsewhere.
